About Eukanuba

If you’ve ever seen a German Shorthaired Pointer lock on a rigid point, or a Chesapeake Bay Retriever make a 100-yard cast across a cold marsh, you understand the talent, nobility and dedication of the well-trained sporting dog that brings out our unconditional respect. The people who work at Eukanuba respect the breed – and all its details. It’s understanding the subtle nuances that help us make quality, customized dog food for all breeds, including the noble pointers and retrievers we love so well.

A Little History in High-Quality Ingredients

From the beginning, Eukanuba has stood for producing our highest-quality dog food product to help nurture the best qualities in dogs. When The Iams Company launched Eukanuba premium dog food in the U.S. in 1969, no one had ever heard of chicken parts in dry dog food. But that’s the kind of innovation and understanding it takes to make optimal nutrition for the breeds we love.

Eukanuba’s 25% protein and 16% fat levels dwarfed the competition’s respective 11% and 7% typical levels. Not long thereafter, Eukanuba went back to the drawing board and raised the protein levels even higher, from 25% to 30%, and the fat levels from 16% to 20%.

In 1973 during the oil crisis, the government imposed price controls that forced many dog food manufacturers to use cheaper ingredients. Eukanuba resisted, deciding not to cheapen the formula, and took a loss for the first time in its history. But during the dog shows of 1974, breeders like you took notice and orders climbed. It was the beginning of a beautiful relationship between Eukanuba and the breeder community – a relationship in which we’ve shared a respect for the breed and the importance of high-quality ingredients.
